In the United States, dietitians and nutritionists earned a median of $76,400 a year ($36.73 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In the NHS in England, dietitians typically start on band 5, which pays £32,073 to £39,043 from April 2026. Ireland's HSE pays staff-grade dietitians €45,063 to €64,424 from February 2026.
Dietitian salary at a glance
Salary websites dominate search results for this question, but they mostly report advertised pay or user submissions. This guide uses only government wage surveys, public health-service pay scales and the profession's own compensation survey, and gives the date and currency for each figure. Pay in private practice and industry is negotiated and rarely published, so treat the public-sector scales as a floor-to-ceiling guide for employed roles rather than a ceiling for the profession.

United States: what dietitians make
National pay
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that dietitians and nutritionists had a median annual wage of $76,400 in May 2025, or $36.73 an hour. The lowest 10% earned less than $49,090 and the highest 10% more than $103,720 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, dietitians and nutritionists). Median pay differed by employer:
- outpatient care centres: $80,790;
- hospitals (state, local and private): $78,180;
- government: $78,070;
- nursing and residential care facilities: $75,670.
Hospitals are the biggest employer, with 27% of jobs in 2025, followed by government at 11%. The BLS figure combines dietitians with nutritionists and leaves out self-employed workers, who make up 9% of the occupation. Our United States country guide covers the credential and state licensing rules behind these numbers.
The profession's own survey
Every few years, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and its credentialing agency, the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), survey members and non-members who hold a CDR credential. The 2024 survey, with 5,652 usable responses and data current as of 1 January 2024, found a median of $37.98 an hour for practising registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs). Annualised over a 40-hour week, that is about $79,000. Median total cash compensation for RDNs who had worked full time in their position for at least a year was $80,400 (Compensation and Benefits Survey of the Dietetics Profession 2024, executive summary).
The survey authors note that their figure is higher than the BLS estimate available at the time, and give two reasons: their data were more recent, and BLS does not restrict its count to RDNs. In other words, the survey describes credentialed dietitians, while BLS includes everyone classified as a dietitian or nutritionist. The survey had a 12% response rate, and the authors warn that the results should be read with possible non-response bias in mind.
Which states pay dietitians the most?
Location makes a large difference. BLS state data for 2025, published through the Department of Labor's O*NET OnLine service, show these medians for the states we checked:
| State | Median annual wage, 2025 | 10th to 90th percentile | Median hourly |
|---|---|---|---|
| California | $98,850 | $72,780 to $130,850 | $47.52 |
| New Jersey | $84,450 | $62,670 to $114,400 | $40.60 |
| New York | $82,480 | $62,100 to $105,830 | $39.66 |
| Hawaii | $81,920 | $65,330 to $100,610 | $39.38 |
| Florida | $76,050 | $49,920 to $93,530 | $36.56 |
| Texas | $74,440 | $40,040 to $98,960 | $35.79 |
| Georgia | $73,200 | $47,250 to $96,430 | $35.19 |
| United States | $76,400 | $49,090 to $103,720 | $36.73 |

California stood out among these states, with a median almost $22,500 above the national figure. Higher pay usually comes with higher living costs, so compare housing and tax before you treat a state median as a raise. Within each state, metropolitan areas can also differ widely from the statewide median.
United Kingdom: NHS pay bands
In the UK, most dietitians work in the NHS, where pay follows the national Agenda for Change system. NHS Health Careers says dietitians are "typically starting on band 5" (NHS Health Careers, dietitian role). Specialist, advanced, team-lead and consultant posts are advertised at higher bands.
From 1 April 2026, the bands that dietitians usually work in pay (NHS Employers, pay scales for 2026/27):
- Band 5: £32,073 to £39,043
- Band 6: £39,959 to £48,117
- Band 7: £49,387 to £56,515
- Band 8a: £57,528 to £64,750
- Band 8b: £66,582 to £77,368
- Band 8c: £79,504 to £91,609
- Band 8d: £94,356 to £108,814
You move up within a band through pay steps, and between bands by applying for a higher-graded post. These are the rates published by NHS Employers; pay in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is set separately and can differ. Private and industry roles negotiate pay individually. Our United Kingdom country guide explains registration with the Health and Care Professions Council, which every practising dietitian needs.
Ireland: HSE salary scales
How much do dieticians earn in Ireland? In the public health service, the answer is published in the Health Service Executive's consolidated salary scales. The scales effective from 1 February 2026 set out these grades (HSE, February 2026 consolidated pay scales):
| HSE grade | Annual salary from 1 February 2026 | Number of points |
|---|---|---|
| Dietician (staff grade) | €45,063 to €64,424 | 14, including long-service increments |
| Senior dietician | €64,551 to €76,007 | 9 |
| Clinical specialist dietician | €71,405 to €82,860 | 9 |
| Dietician manager | €77,814 to €93,416 | 7 |
| Dietician manager in charge III | €90,076 to €99,140 | 7 |
The scales are revised when public service pay agreements take effect, so check the HSE's latest document before you accept an offer. To practise as a dietitian in Ireland you must register with CORU; our Ireland country guide covers that process.
Canada: hourly wages by province
Canada's federal Job Bank publishes hourly wages for dietitians and nutritionists, mostly from Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey for 2023 to 2024, with some provinces estimated by a small-area model for 2024 (Job Bank, dietitian and nutritionist wages). The national median was CA$41.63 an hour, with a low of CA$22.53 and a high of CA$50.00.
Provincial medians were:
- Alberta: CA$46.24
- British Columbia: CA$44.00
- Ontario and Saskatchewan: CA$42.00
- Nova Scotia: CA$41.94
- Prince Edward Island: CA$40.38
- Quebec, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador: CA$40.00
- Manitoba: CA$34.36
Figures for the three territories were not published because of data limitations. In the public sector, pay is set by provincial collective agreements; our Canada country guide explains registration with the provincial colleges.
Australia: state public-health scales
Australia has no single national pay scale for public hospital dietitians. Pay is set by each state's awards and agreements. Queensland Health is one state that publishes its rates in full, and it advertises dietitian posts against the levels of its health practitioner stream.
From 1 September 2026, after the 2026 State Wage Case, Queensland Health's rates are (Queensland Health, health practitioners stream wage rates):
- HP3: A$83,824 at the first pay point, rising to A$120,740 at HP3.7;
- HP4: A$132,689 to A$142,315.
Queensland Health says the annual figures are the fortnightly rate multiplied by 26.089 and are given for reference. Other states set different rates, and private-sector pay is negotiated. Our Australia country guide covers the Accredited Practising Dietitian credential.
Dietitian salary per hour
If you work part time, in locum roles or in private practice, hourly pay is the more useful number.
- United States: the BLS median was $36.73 an hour in May 2025. The Academy survey found $37.98 for practising RDNs as of January 2024. Among the states above, medians ranged from $35.19 in Georgia to $47.52 in California.
- Canada: the national median was CA$41.63 an hour.
- Australia (Queensland Health): the published hourly rate for the first HP3 pay point is A$42.28 for a 76-hour fortnight.
- UK and Ireland: NHS and HSE scales are annual. Divide by your contracted annual hours for an hourly equivalent.
For self-employed work, remember that a client-facing rate must also pay for unbilled time, insurance, registration fees, software and tax.
Starting salaries for newly qualified dietitians
Graduates usually want to know the entry point rather than the median. Public pay scales make this easy to read, because new staff normally start at the bottom of the grade they are appointed to.
- England: a newly qualified NHS dietitian on band 5 starts at £32,073 from April 2026, rising through the band's pay steps towards £39,043.
- Ireland: the first point of the HSE staff-grade dietitian scale is €45,063 from February 2026.
- Queensland: the first HP3 pay point is A$83,824 from September 2026. Check the level stated in the job advertisement, because entry arrangements differ between posts and states.
- United States: there is no national entry scale. The BLS 10th percentile, $49,090 in May 2025, gives a rough idea of pay at the lower end, and the Academy survey shows the size of the experience gap: $10.38 an hour between dietitians with less than five years in the field and those with 20 or more.
Two cautions apply when you compare these numbers. First, they are in different currencies and were set at different dates, so do not compare them directly without allowing for exchange rates, tax and living costs. Second, the route to that first job differs. In the United States it now includes a graduate degree, while in the UK, Ireland and Australia an accredited bachelor's or master's programme leads to registration. Unpaid supervised practice is part of most routes and adds to the real cost of entry.
What moves a dietitian's pay
The Academy's 2024 survey is the clearest public evidence on why some dietitians earn more than others. Its findings, all as of January 2024, include:
- Experience: dietitians with 20 or more years in the field earned a median $10.38 an hour more than those with less than five years.
- Supervision: those overseeing 100 or more employees earned a median $21.63 an hour more than those who supervised no one. More than six in ten RDNs reported no supervisory authority.
- Budget responsibility: those managing budgets of $1 million or more earned a median 37% more than those with no budget responsibility.
- Education: RDNs with a doctorate had a median of $50.95 an hour, more than $13 above those with a bachelor's degree. A master's added $1.00 an hour over a bachelor's.
- Specialty certification: holders of at least one specialty certification earned $39.90 an hour, against $36.97 without. The highest medians were for the Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics ($46.53) and the Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist ($41.68).
- Practice area: management and executive leadership, education and research, and consulting and business paid the highest hourly wages.
- Extra pay: 48% of practising RDNs received at least one type of additional cash compensation in the previous year, most often bonuses (27%).
One finding surprises people. Holding a state licence was associated with slightly lower median pay ($1.38 an hour in 2024), which the authors attribute at least partly to the large pool of unlicensed RDNs in California, a high-wage state. It does not mean a licence lowers your pay; where a state requires one, you cannot practise without it.
Clinical specialism also opens doors. Our guide to working as a renal dietitian shows one specialist route, and our overview of dietitian jobs covers where the openings are.
Pay surveys show associations, not guarantees. A doctorate or a certification is linked to higher pay partly because of the roles people with them go on to hold. Choose a specialism you want to practise, then use the data to negotiate.
Is the graduate degree worth it for pay?
In the United States, new candidates for the registration exam have needed a graduate degree since 1 January 2024 (Commission on Dietetic Registration, graduate degree requirement). The survey gives an early hint at the pay return: the median master's premium over a bachelor's was $1.00 an hour, while a doctorate added far more. Whether the requirement will push pay up by tightening supply, or shrink the number of new dietitians, is still an open question. Our companion guide to nutritionist salary sets out both sides of that debate and what it means for people without the dietitian credential.
For most readers the practical question is simpler: compare the full cost of qualifying in your country, including unpaid placements, with the starting pay above. Our guide on how to become a dietitian sets out the route country by country.
Negotiating and finding better-paid work
Use the published figures. In public systems, check the band or grade the post should sit at and the pay point you should start on. In private roles, bring the government or survey median for your area and setting, plus your credentials and outcomes.
Widen your search, too. Telehealth roles can let you work for employers in higher-paying regions, subject to licensing where your clients live; our guide to remote dietitian jobs explains the rules. Industry, research and education roles often pay more than frontline clinical work, and our guide to nutritionist jobs covers roles open to people with nutrition degrees. Is dietitian a stressful job?
It can be, depending on the setting. We found no official statistics on stress levels for dietitians specifically. Hospital roles can involve heavy caseloads and acutely ill patients, while private practice brings business pressures. The work also ranges widely, from wards to research and industry, so the pressures differ by role. Ask about caseload, supervision and support when you interview.
