The Philippines regulates nutrition and dietetics as one profession: the Registered Nutritionist-Dietitian (RND), licensed by the Professional Regulation Commission after a board exam under the Philippine Nutrition and Dietetics Law of 2016 (RA 10862). Many Filipino RNDs work abroad, especially in the Gulf. Food supplements are registered with FDA Philippines.

How the profession is regulated

The Philippine Nutrition and Dietetics Law of 2016, Republic Act 10862, regulates the practice of nutrition and dietetics. The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), through its Board of Nutrition and Dietetics, conducts the licensure examination and issues the professional licence. Graduates of a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics, including a required internship, sit the board exam; those who pass become Registered Nutritionist-Dietitians (RND). The licence is renewed every three years, with continuing professional development requirements.

Unlike many countries, the Philippines does not split dietitians and nutritionists: the RND is a single combined profession that covers clinical, community, food service and public health work. The Nutritionist-Dietitians' Association of the Philippines (NDAP) is the accredited professional organisation, providing continuing education, conferences and advocacy.

The workforce and the health burden

The Philippines faces a classic double burden of malnutrition. Stunting, wasting and micronutrient deficiencies in children remain serious public health problems, tracked by the Department of Science and Technology's Food and Nutrition Research Institute through national nutrition surveys. At the same time, overweight, obesity, diabetes and hypertension are rising among adults, particularly in cities. RNDs work across this whole spectrum, from community feeding programmes to hospital diabetes clinics.

A large share of Filipino RNDs work overseas, mainly in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and other Gulf states, as well as in Singapore, the United States, Canada and Australia. Remittances from health professionals are an important part of the national economy, and the outflow is a recurring workforce issue for Philippine hospitals.

Strengths of the Philippine market

  • A single, licensed profession. One clear credential, the RND, avoids the confusion between dietitians and nutritionists seen elsewhere.
  • An English-speaking, internationally mobile workforce. Filipino RNDs are recruited worldwide.
  • A national nutrition programme. The National Nutrition Council coordinates the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition, with local nutrition action officers and barangay nutrition scholars in communities.
  • Household pharmaceutical brands. Unilab, one of the country's largest pharmaceutical companies, makes widely used vitamins and supplements.
  • Dense pharmacy retail. Mercury Drug, Watsons and natural health stores such as Healthy Options reach consumers nationwide.

Opportunities

For practitioners

Hospitals in Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao employ clinical RNDs; government programmes employ public health nutritionists at national and local level; and food service, corporate wellness, school feeding and the food and supplement industry recruit RNDs. Overseas recruitment is a major career path. For those who stay, specialisation in diabetes, renal, paediatrics and critical care offers advancement.

For companies

The Philippine supplement market is driven by pharmacies, household vitamin brands and increasingly by online marketplaces. Multivitamins, vitamin C, children's vitamins and herbal products are long-standing categories. Price sensitivity is high, so value and trusted brands matter. Direct selling is also significant.

How food supplements are regulated

The Food and Drug Administration of the Philippines regulates food supplements, which must be registered and carry a Certificate of Product Registration before sale. Labels must carry the mandatory statement that the product has no approved therapeutic claims ("No Approved Therapeutic Claims"). Manufacturers, importers and distributors need a licence to operate. Herbal medicines and traditional products follow separate rules. FDA Philippines regularly issues advisories against unregistered products, especially those sold online.

Public health priorities

The Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition targets stunting, wasting, micronutrient deficiencies and overweight. The First 1000 Days programme focuses on maternal and early childhood nutrition. Food fortification of rice, flour, cooking oil and sugar is mandated for key nutrients. The government's dietary guidelines, the Pinggang Pinoy healthy plate and Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos, support public education.

Practical notes

For Filipino RNDs planning to work abroad

Popular destinations each have their own licensing: the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties in Saudi Arabia, the health authorities in the UAE, Singapore's SNDA accreditation in Singapore, and registration routes in Canada, Australia and the United States. Keep certified copies of transcripts, internship records and your PRC licence, and maintain continuing professional development.

For companies entering the Philippines

Obtain a licence to operate as an importer or distributor, register each food supplement with FDA Philippines, include the "No Approved Therapeutic Claims" statement, and plan for both pharmacy and online channels. Regional trade shows in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur attract Philippine buyers; see the events calendar.

How Philippines fits the global picture

Worldwide, 2.6 billion adults were living with overweight in 2024, and 940 million of them with obesity[1]. Diabetes affects 589 million adults aged 20 to 79[2]. The global dietary supplements market was valued at US$209.5 billion in 2025 and is forecast to reach US$431.7 billion by 2033[3]. Those three numbers frame demand for dietitians and nutrition products in every country on the Global Hub.
