In Ireland, dietitians must register with CORU's Dietitians Registration Board; 1,652 were registered in mid-2025. The Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute (INDI) is the professional body and will host the International Congress of Nutrition and Dietetics in Dublin in August 2028. Supplements are regulated as food by the FSAI under EU rules.

How the profession is regulated

CORU, Ireland's multi-profession health regulator, runs the Dietitians Registration Board. "Dietitian" is a protected title: only CORU registrants may use it. CORU approves education programmes, sets standards of proficiency and a code of conduct, and requires continuing professional development.

CORU's State of the Register report lists 1,652 registered dietitians for the first half of 2025, with 62 new registrants and 9 removals in the period[1]. That is a small workforce for a population of more than five million, which helps explain steady recruitment by the Health Service Executive and private providers.

The Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute (INDI) is the professional body for registered dietitians in Ireland. It runs continuing education, specialist interest groups and public information, and it will host the 20th International Congress of Nutrition and Dietetics in Dublin from 15 to 19 August 2028[2].

The workforce in numbers

With 1,652 dietitians on the register[1], Ireland's profession is compact. Most dietitians work in the public health service, in acute hospitals, primary care, disability services and community nutrition, with a growing private sector in sports, gut health, weight management and paediatrics. Industry is an unusually important employer because of Ireland's large food, dairy and nutrition ingredient sector.

Strengths of the Irish market

  • Global host in 2028. ICND 2028 will bring dietitians from around the world to Dublin, raising the profile of Irish dietetics[2].
  • World-class nutrition industry. Glanbia, headquartered in Ireland, owns Optimum Nutrition and other performance nutrition brands; Kerry Group is a global leader in taste and nutrition ingredients.
  • Medical nutrition specialists. Irish companies such as Nualtra develop oral nutrition supplements for clinical use.
  • EU market access. Products made in Ireland can be sold across the European Union under harmonised food supplement rules.
  • English-speaking EU base. Ireland is a natural European hub for US and UK nutrition companies.

Opportunities

For practitioners

The Health Service Executive continues to invest in community and primary care services, including chronic disease management programmes in which dietitians play a role. Specialist posts in diabetes, paediatrics, oncology and eating disorders are in demand. Industry roles in regulatory affairs, product development and nutrition science are more plentiful than the size of the country would suggest, because of Glanbia, Kerry and the dairy sector.

For companies

Ireland combines EU market access with an English-language business environment, strong food science research and a skilled workforce. Supplement companies notify the Food Safety Authority of Ireland before placing food supplements on the market and must follow EU rules on permitted vitamins and minerals and authorised health claims. Medical nutrition products follow EU rules on foods for special medical purposes.

The supplement and nutrition industry

Ireland's nutrition sector punches far above its size. Glanbia and Kerry supply proteins, ingredients and nutrition solutions worldwide; dairy co-operatives produce infant and medical nutrition ingredients; and domestic brands such as Revive Active sell supplements at home and abroad. University research centres in food and health support the industry. See the supplier directory and the Netherlands and Switzerland hubs for other European nutrition centres.

Practical notes

For internationally trained dietitians

CORU recognises qualifications from outside Ireland through an assessment against Irish standards. Applicants may be asked to complete an adaptation period or aptitude test. Evidence of English-language competence is required for non-native speakers. Once registered, dietitians can apply for public service and private roles.

For companies

Notify the FSAI before marketing a food supplement, keep labels in line with EU rules, and use only authorised health claims. Irish manufacturers can export across the EU without further approval in most member states, though some states run their own notification procedures; see the Germany, France and Italy hubs.

Events

ICND 2028 in Dublin is the headline event for the profession worldwide; abstract submission and registration details will be published by the organisers[2]. Irish companies and dietitians also attend Vitafoods Europe and Fi Europe; see the events calendar.

Where Irish dietitians work

The Health Service Executive is the largest employer, with dietitians in acute hospitals, children's hospitals, maternity services, mental health, disability services and community care. The Sláintecare reform programme aims to shift care from hospitals to the community, and enhanced community care teams and chronic disease hubs now include dietitians for diabetes, cardiovascular and respiratory disease. Outside the HSE, dietitians work in private practice, voluntary organisations, sports bodies, universities and the food and nutrition industry.

Education and training

Dietitians in Ireland train through CORU-approved programmes, including undergraduate degrees in human nutrition and dietetics and postgraduate master's programmes for graduates of related sciences. Training includes extended clinical placements in Irish hospitals and community settings. Graduates register with CORU before they can practise. Continuing professional development is a registration requirement, and INDI supports it through courses, specialist interest groups and its annual events.

Public health priorities

Ireland's healthy eating guidelines and food pyramid underpin public messaging, and the national obesity policy and action plan set out measures on food reformulation, marketing to children, physical activity and treatment services. A sugar-sweetened drinks tax has been in place since 2018. As in other countries, the arrival of GLP-1 medicines is changing obesity care, and dietitians are part of the specialist obesity services that are being developed. Food safety and nutrition science are supported by the FSAI, safefood, the all-island body, and university research centres.

A market-entry checklist for supplement companies

  1. Confirm that ingredients, forms and doses comply with EU rules and Irish guidance.
  2. Notify the product to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland before placing it on the market.
  3. Use only EU-authorised health claims, with their conditions of use, and avoid medicinal claims.
  4. Check whether any ingredient is a novel food requiring EU authorisation.
  5. Label in English, and in Irish where you choose, with the required food supplement wording and dose.
  6. If the product makes medicinal claims or contains medicinal levels of an ingredient, consult the Health Products Regulatory Authority, which regulates medicines.

How Ireland fits the global picture

Worldwide, 2.6 billion adults were living with overweight in 2024, and 940 million of them with obesity[3]. Diabetes affects 589 million adults aged 20 to 79[4]. The global dietary supplements market was valued at US$209.5 billion in 2025 and is forecast to reach US$431.7 billion by 2033[5]. Those three numbers frame demand for dietitians and nutrition products in every country on the Global Hub.
